I contacted Kosair Children's Hospital, and spoke with Chrissy Angle, who is a departmental secretary of this advocacy agency. She provided me with the general information that I needed to know about the advocacy services they provide. Kosair has many different types of advocacy services that they provide such as child safety in cars and on bikes. The mission statement states that they are proud to be the voice for all children. It is their belief that with prevention, intervention and education they can make a positive difference on child safety, guide policies that affect children and their families, and offer health education to enrich our societies, families, and the lives of all children.
By educating families, they are advocating for children. An example of how they do this by holding seminars to provide information on child safety. This past July, they joined together with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in hosting an event to exhibit the dangers of abandoning children in hot cars. While this is obvious to some, others don't realize the severity of the consequences that could come from this. The event was free to ensure a good turnout.
When talking to Ms. Angle, I feel that she was speaking on the behalf of her company, which advocates for children. She said she became alarmed when she noticed the increasing amount of deaths since 1998. She became involved in 1999 in Winchester Kentucky, when 11 month old Bryan Puckett, died from being left in a hot car.
Ms. Angle states that she loves every part of her job but feels that the most rewarding aspect about her work is being able to save the lives of children. She only wishes that more people knew about the programs that are being offered. She makes sure to make flyers and post them to as many public places as possible but many times people are too occupied with life obligations. Ms. Angles does not feel like this agency affects any of her personal values because it was built on values and that the job position was exactly what she expected. She stated that is the main reason why she works there.
