Advantages and dis advantage of an employee leaving to go work for a competitor

If an employee leaves a company to go work for a competitor the some of the knowledge that the employee may share with their new employer may be considered ethical and some may be considered unethical. The employee must decide which information he should or should not share. The competitor should also be cautious of the information or knowledge they are receiving from the new employee, so that they don't find themselves breaking any laws. The competitor must also make the decision to behave ethically, by competing fairly.

It would be considered ethical for the employee to share the names of some of the vendors the other company was using; it would be unethical for the employee to share information of pricing the vendors are giving the previous company. If the employee were to share the pricing info this may be considered insider trading; since the information obtained by the competitor will be used to give them an advantage over the vendor and the other company. It would be unethical for the new employee to share knowledge about new products or projects that their former company was developing. Unknowingly to the employee these products may be protected by a patent or a license; and sharing this information may not only get the competitor in legal trouble but will also get the new employee in legal trouble. The employee can share ethical knowledge such as procedures to better time management or production times. It is also important for the employee to decide if his actions will cause harm to the company he left.
