The first sentences of this piece make you believe that this would be a love story but when you continue reading you realized that is totally the opposite or maybe it is true love, actually I don't know. The only thing I know is that he is writing this as a confession, an option can be that he doesn't have the strength to said to his wife what happened and he is using this to tell her but not directly. He did think about what he was going to do twice, I think that's why he said that his feet stank, he realized that that wasn't what he wanted, maybe he was in love with his wife but there is a possibility that they have fight and he look for an easy way to forget the reality.
Because the story was written in 1947 but published in 1968, the days and traditions where totally different, an infidelity could be judge worse than now on days. In 2013 the friends with benefits are more common than serious relationships. Because of the wars those days the author and his wife could have problems related to that, that's why he run away to go back to his past. He decided to published 21 years later because the times where changing there were more freedom to express yourself, and it is never too late to be sorry and to apologize for what you did, everyone make mistakes.
The moral for this story is simple, there is time for everything if a thing doesn't happen when it is supposed to happen is for a reason, and you have to move on and don't go back. At the end he didn't did anything wrong and that's good because maybe he felt the guiltiness inside of him, he had the opportunity but he didn't took it.
