Essay on "A Gap of Sky"
Anna Hope, who is the author of this short story, wrote it back in 2008. She is perhaps most famous for her acting career as "Doctor Who" in the movie "Novice Hame" but she has also attended in other movies such as "New Earth" and "Gridlock". As far as her writing career is concerned she has published a few books. They are all, as far as I'm informed, about romance, so "A Gap of Sky" differs a lot from her normal genre.
The first I thought of when I read the short story was the sentences. It appears as if she is very busy all the time. One of the reasons is of course because of the essay she is supposed to make, but I also think it is because of the coke. She wakes up in the middle of the day don't remembering what she has done the night before. He health might not be as god because of the drugs. The drugs make her hart beat a lot faster than it normally would do. I am picturing the majority of the sentences as if she has cold sweat and difficulties catching her breath and therefore needs a small break from sentence to sentence which would explain all the "fragments" of short lines of words.
(l.29-31)"She is going to have to work through the night, but it is fine. This is fine. Coke. Does she have any left? Find the wrap, in the bra.."
It is like watching a small animal for example a rat. The small animals heart's beats really fast because of their size and the rat tend to move in sudden movements. I could imagine that, that is what she would look like. Maybe she is still under the influence of coke and alcohol from the night before and that could very well be. That would explain a lot, especially her way of thinking. I see the protagonist as a person who has became addicted to drugs, more precisely, coke. She is discussing with herself if she should make her essay or not. She has been given an ultimatum from her course, which is to do her written schoolwork or facing the risk of being expelled.
The nineteen-year-old Ellie has been sent to London for studying purposes by her parents. She doesn't really care. In the evening/night she is out partying and having fun, but still, it seems like she has to sides. One part of her would like to party all night but at the same time there is a second part of her who would like to do her essay. The last-mentioned part seems to have some reasonability involved. She knows she has to do the essay because of the ultimatum she has been faced with but yet she would like to party. In the end she finds ink for her printer.
(l.131)"She will write her essay and that will be a good thing. A good thing and the right thing to do"
We are not told that she would start on her essay but she says she will. "It is the right thing to do". Because of her addiction problem to coke
