A Diamond Personality Case Study

One would say that it takes an immense amount of hard work and dedication to start a business and others could say that people sometimes just get lucky. In the case of Oscar Rodriquez more than just luck provided him with the successful business that he has today. Many factors contributed to his becoming a successful business owner, and one headed in the right direction.

What factors do you think have contributed to Rodriguez's success? Was he merely "in the right place at the right time," or are there characteristics about him that contribute to his success?

The factors that contributed to Rodriguez's success started with his ambition and motivation to move to America and attain a degree at a community college. His success continued as he started working at a jeweler and wanted more out of the job than just selling jewelry. Rodriguez wanted more out of life so he received his Diamonds and Diamonds Grading certification. He quickly realized that he was not satisfied with just working at the store and started to explore other business ventures. Rodriguez proved himself to be a very ambitious man and an extremely motivated individual with many resources. He was also known as possessing a great personality and someone who paid close attention to detail. All of which made him the successful entrepreneur who he is today (Robbins, Judge, 2009).

How do you believe Rodriguez would score on the Big Five dimensions of personality (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience)? Which ones would he score high on? Which ones might he score low on?

Oscar Rodriguez would overall score relatively good on the Big Five dimensions of personality. He seems to be quite comfortable when dealing with other people and knows what he wants and goes after it. Because of Rodriguez's success he seems that he would score quite well in the agreeableness department. To start a business that practically does not exist, one would have to be cooperative, warm, and trusting, in order to get partners or investors. Because he has successfully built this company from ground up, one could say that he is very conscientious and is responsible, organized, dependable, and persistent. Moving to a new country, learning English, and attending a local community college suggest that Rodriguez is emotionally stable. For him to enter a world unknown to him and is handled in a different language than his native tongue would propose that he is a calm, self-confident, and secure person. Rodriguez went into the diamond business with no knowledge or desire to pursue this as a career but he saw this as an opportunity to build something and so he did (Robbins, Judge, 2009).

Do you believe that Rodriguez is high or low on core self-evaluation? On what information did you base your decision?

Oscar
