Brief Background of the Study

Burger king and Wendy’s are the leading fast food companies in the world. The study draws a comparison of two fast food companies in terms of performance, financial status, their strengths, weakness, opportunities, threats. The primary source of data and related information are solely collected from the secondary sources and the comparative analysis is based on common comparable parameters which are detailed out under specific chapter and topics.

Wendy’s

Wendy's is an Old Fashioned Hamburgers in an international fast food chain restaurant. It was founded by Dave Thomas on November 15, 1969, in Columbus, Ohio, United States. Wendy’s was named after his second daughter, Melinda Lou Thomas, who was fondly nicknamed “Wendy” by her older siblings. The Wendy’s Company, and each of their subsidiary companies is committed to the highest standards of integrity and fair dealing in all of its activities and compliance with both the letter and spirit of the law.

The company’s headquarters is in Dublin, Ohio. Wendy's was the world's third largest hamburger fast food chain with approximately 6,650 locations. On April 24, 2008, the company announced a merger with Trier, the parent company of Arby's. Despite the new ownership, Wendy's headquarters remained in Dublin.

Wendy's restaurants are approximately 77% franchised, the majority of which are located in North America. Wendy's menu consists primarily of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, French fries and beverages, including the Frosty. The company does not have a signature sandwich. In 1979, Wendy's was the first fast-food chain to introduce the salad bar.

Burger king

Burger King, often abbreviated as BK, is a global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants headquartered in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The company began in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida-based restaurant chain. After Insta-Burger King ran into financial difficulties in 1954, its two Miami-based franchisees, David Edgerton and James McLamore, purchased the company and renamed it as Burger king.

At the end of fiscal year 2012, Burger King reported it had almost 12,700 outlets in 73 countries; of these, 66 percent are in the United States and 95 percent are privately owned and operated with its new owners moving to an entirely franchised model by the end of 2013. In 1957, the Whopper was the first major addition to the menu; it has since become Burger King's signature product.

Burger King, which has struggled as a series of owners traded it like a baseball card, was late to try to improve the nutritional quality of its food. But under its newest owner, the private equity group 3G Capitals, the chain has invested time and money in retooling its menu over the last two years, adding choices like cranberry apple salads and mango smoothies and taking one of two slices of cheese off its burgers in the biggest changes to its menu since opening in 1954.
