The problems caused by Alzheimer's disease

I first encountered to the case of dementia in the book "The Notebook" by N. Sparks. The story was about two people whose love could overcome even such a fatal brain illness as Alzheimer's disease. It is the most common form of dementia when destroy of brain cells causes loss of memory and speech problems. Mainly old people reaching the age of 60-65 are exposed to this disorder.

According to the recent research of the World Health Organization, 18 million people suffer from this dysfunction. Alarmingly, the number of patients is estimated to double in the next 20 years and rise almost exponentially by 2060. The main problem is that no cure is found yet. Currently, there is no test to recognize and name Alzheimer's disease in patients. They have to undergo numerous expensive tests to prevent other possible causes of cognitive disorder.

The high cost of social care is another side of the problem. Recently the World Alzheimer's Association estimated: the overall cost of dementia worldwide, including Alzheimer's disease, has increased to over $ 600 billion. According to the report of the Health News Digest, the total economic burden is expected to reach $ 872 billion in 30 years.

Another problem is some doctor's attitude to the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. They either believe that it is incurable or they find it too complicated and annoying. We also need to educate families to be aware and act in appropriate way not taking forgetting with age for granted.
