The US airways group was founded in 1939, and was named the All-American Aviation bringing

the very first airmail to a large number of small western Ohio Valley and Pennsylvania communities by introducing the flying post office service (usairways.com, 2012). During the late 1940s the name was changed to the All American Airways and the company changed from airmail delivery to passenger services by using the DC-3. The airline's route system grew in the early 1950s and once again the name was changed, but this time it was changed to Allegheny Airlines which transitioned in the mid-1960s to turbine-powered aircraft, the first Convair 580 was its workhorse for a few years afterwards (usairways.com, 2012).

In 1966 the DC9-30 was the airlines first jet, and was replaced a year later by a fleet of 62 bigger

DC9-30 jets. At the end of the 1960s Allegheny began its commuter services, and this was the start of its present network of 10 regional airlines that offer US Airways Express services to over 165 cities around the nation (usairwairways.com, 2012). In 1968 and 1972, the airline merged with Lake Central Airlines and purchased Mohawk Airlines to add to its DC9s, to become one of the top ten largest airlines in the world according to passenger boarding's (usairways.com, 2012).

During the late 1970s, the company made another change and gave itself a new name, USAir

was the name that would give meaning to its expansion. USAir began its frequent traveler program in the mid-1980s, and in 1987 large scale consolidations of airlines created by deregulation continued (usairways.com, 2012). As airlines competed for the thriving California market the merging and buying of local carriers increased, with USAir acquiring a nice portion of the local services. And in the mid-1990s USAir reveals its first year of profits since 1988, with profits of $119.3 million on sales of $7.474 billion, and began the priority travelworksSM, enabling customers to schedule flights form their personal computers (USAirways.com, 2012).

In 1996 USAir elected its new management, continued its transatlantic developments, and

Introduced ticketless travel to airline consumers. In just two weeks, USAir announced one of the biggest single orders for an airline, and then announced its new image, name, and identity that would be with them into the new millennium (usairways.com, 2012). USAir ordered over 350 new airbus A319, A320, and A321 twin jets with narrow-bodied to be delivered in 1998 through 2009; and within days US Airways became its new name.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the department of the government that

regulates the airline industry and in 2011 gave the US Airways good rating for its fully-functioning safety management system (SMS). This made US Airways the first airlines to be validated by the FAA for its voluntary companywide safety management system (usairways.com, 2012). Since the airline industry offers its services to the public, the government regulates national security, aircraft integrity, industry behavior, traffic control and a few other issues. Most of the regulations are for safety issues but there are a few regulations
