My Experience Using O'NET Online
The O'NET is a result of a research project sponsored by the U. S. Department of Labor. It was designed to provide a comprehensive system of occupational descriptions to serve the needs for job information in the future. This manual also replaces the DOT (Dictionary of Occupational Titles) and incorporates years of knowledge about the nature of jobs and work.
I would like to thank my wonderful instructor for introducing the O'NET to me. I had completely forgotten about this wonderful handbook which reminds me of the Dictionary of Occupational Titles manual that was used in TN Employment Security where I worked in the Executive division and this manual was widely used.
It was very easy to find the specific occupation that I looked for and it was somewhat broad in providing information on my occupation. It gave a summary of my occupation and provided a sample of other job titles which also matched my skills and also a list of related occupations. Information included the responsibilities such as tasks, tools and technology, knowledge, skills, and abilities in relations to the occupation. The O'Net also has a section "mynextmove.org" in which I browsed by keywords in which it was searched by which came up with other careers that I had never heard of before. It is useful in providing a variety of tools for understanding the nature of work. It focuses on both positions of worker characteristics and abilities. It includes a development of cross-job descriptions which provides a common language to describe different jobs. I find this to be very efficient because a new job description does not need to be invented for every new job.
Job analysis can be defined as the series of activities to systematically collect, categorize, and document all important about a specific job. Some questions such as the following are asked: (1)What does or should the person do? (2)What knowledge, skill and abilities are required? (3)What is the result of person
