Country Lovers:

Country lovers takes place at a farm in South Africa 1900s. It was a time when there was strong racial dividers and love between races was not tolerated. Thebedi works on the farm that Paulus' dad owns. Because of the racial and social class boundaries, they are forced to hide their relationship from others. The setting mainly takes place in three areas; the farm, where the boy lives, the river where they meet to hide their relationship and do their sexual encounters, and the village where the girl lives. The settings helped tell the theme of the story because it gives a clear understanding of the racial and social parts in the forbidden love and what's at stake. The boy lives in a beautiful and wealthy home, which is described to be a "high social class" home. The girl lives in a poor home with the other workers. The river is described as very nostalgic, since it has been their place ever since they were children.

Tony's Story:

Tony's story takes place in or near a pueblo, which is an Indian reservation in modern time. Tony have lived all his life at the reservation, it has its own administration, its own laws and its own police. It also takes place in the United States of America, a larger world outside the reservation - like the gas station and the state policeman. The Indians have been oppressed for decades and treated like they were a weaker race, which the state policeman clearly do. The first scene is at the San Lorenzo's Day, a festival that the pueblo celebrates. Leon have been influenced by his period in the military therefore reacts differently then Tony because he never have been out of the pueblo. His source of wisdom is from "the stories that old Teofilo told" which perhaps is the spirit world.
