Evaluate interpersonal and written communications techniques

Interpersonal Skills

Interpersonal Skills are very important when working as they allow people to communicate in appropriate levels to other members of staff. For example, if I needed to inform a senior member of staff of a small detail, then an email would be the most appropriate and efficient as it is quick to send and read, and there is no need to actually spend time ringing them or speaking to them face to face. However, a personal matter about something would sound better and more reassuring if it was said face to face. There are many other ways of using these skills, e.g. Phoning, Emailing, Texting, Speaking or a Memo. However, only some of these skills are appropriate for certain tasks, as mentioned above. Phoning would be the best choice of communicating when needing an answer quickly i.e. if I needed to know something that only the Manager knew, I would ring them up and ask them down the phone, as it would be quicker than them replying to an email. Emailing is the most efficient for a small non-urgent matter. Texting is not appropriate in the workplace unless for example, you need to know where someone is or something similar to this reason. Speaking is the most personal and would express the highest interpersonal skill as it requires talking, listening and courage to ask a question that may seem silly to someone else. A memo is the 'paper version' of an email, as it is perfect for a small note, however it would be much less efficient than an email because it could get lost and cannot be kept easily.

However, Interpersonal skills are more than just communicating; it's about listening, understanding the given information and then using it in your work. It would also cover problem solving and courage to ask the thing that you need to know. So it has a wide range of techniques. When receiving this information, the best ways would be speaking or phoning as these ways allow you to ask any questions about the given information, if it is not understood. However, having said this emailing would still allow this feature but it would obviously bring a slower reply as they might not check their inbox every 10 minutes. Problem solving is linked to communicating and interpersonal skills because if someone had a problem then they would need to be able to communicate to someone else so they could ask them the thing that they would to know. This, of course, brings in courage again, because if you asked them a question and they answered it as if it was easy, then it can be embarrassing.

Written Communication

This type of communication rules out Phoning and speaking, as you do not need to write anything down. However, email, text, letter and memos would all be accepted as written communication obviously. As I previously said, an email
