Pengertian penelitian kualitatif:

"Qualitative research is a loosely defined category of research designs or models, all of which elicit verbal, visual, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory data in the form of descriptive narratives like field notes, recordings, or other transcriptions from audio- and videotapes and other written records and pictures or films." --Judith Preissle

Qualitative Research Quantitative Research

• phenomenological

• inductive

• holistic

• subjective/insider centered

• process oriented

• anthropological worldview

• relative lack of control

• goal: understand actor's view

• dynamic reality assumed; "slice of life"

• discovery oriented

• explanatory • positivistic

• hypothetico/deductive

• particularistic

• objective/outsider centered

• outcome oriented

• natural science worldview

• attempt to control variables

• goal: find facts & causes

• static reality assumed; relative constancy in life

• verification oriented

• confirmatory

Metode Kuantitatif menggunakan angka-angka dan data staistik, seperti: experiments, correlational studies using surveys & standardized observational protocols, simulations, supportive materials for case study.

Yang biasanya ditandai dengan: 1. Observe events, 2. Tabulate, 3. Summarize data, 4. Analyze, 5. Draw conclusions

Sedangkan kualitatif menggunakan deskripsi dan kategori dalam wujud kata-kata, seperti: open-ended interviews, naturalistic observation (common in anthropology), document analysis, case studies/life histories, descriptive dan self-reflective supplements to experiments serta correlational studies.

In the social sciences, quantitative research refers to the systematic empirical investigation of social phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques. The objective of quantitative research is to develop and employ mathematical models, theories and/or hypotheses pertaining to phenomena. The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides the fundamental connection between empirical observation and mathematical expression of quantitative relationships.
