What does it feel like? Prickly, smooth, soft, hard, rough, bumpy?

What color is it? Dark green, light green, any other colors besides green?

Describe the leaf edges. Smooth, prickly, tooth-like?

Does your leaf have a scent when you tear it? If so, what does it smell like?

) Describe in detail the plant or tree from which the leaf came.

Describe its size, height, and where it was growing. Do you think it is a monocot, a dicot, or neither? Why? How did you make your decision?

Is it a gymnosperm or an angiosperm? How did you make your decision?

LEAF TWO

A. This leaf is medium green in color, is smooth with smooth edges. It is shaped a bit like an ellipse with a pointed apex . It has a central vein with secondary veins reach up and out . I cannot actually tear one to smell it as it is winter and none of our trees have leaves, but I would think these leaves would have a scent when you tear them.

B. This leaf came from our dogwood tree in the backyard. It is a shorter height tree, probably 8 feet high. The trunk is relatively narrow. It has white flowers in April. I believe it is a dicot as the veins on the leaves branch in a reticulated pattern and the flowers grow in groups of 4. It is an angiosperm as the leaves all fall off in the winter and it produces a small fruit that contains the seeds.

LEAF THREE

A. This leaf is lighter green, shaped like a needle and has a prickly point. It does not have a visible vein system. When you tear it, it smells like pine. It grows individually.

B. This leaf came from a very tall tree in the back of the yard. It is well over 30 feet high. It also produces large pine cones. It is not a monocot or a dicot as pine trees are not flowering trees. It is a conifer. By definition, it is a gymnosperm as it produces seeds in the form of a pine cone. The seeds are exposed in the pine cone.

LEAF Four

1. This leaf is broad, flat, smooth and medium green in color. It has lobed leaves with notched edges. The notches are V-shaped. The points of the lobes of the leaf are slightly rounded. I believe there would be a mild scent when the leaves are ripped (this tree has no leaves at the moment as it is winter!)

2. The tree this leaf came from is very tall, probably 30-40 feet high. It has a wide trunk that I would estimate to be about 3 feet in diameter. It is a dicot due to the reticulated pattern of veins and the 2 cotyledons. It is an angiosperm. The leaves fall off in the winter and it produces a "fruit." We call these whirlybirds. They have two "leaves" coming off a central stem. Each "leaf" contains
