Globalization can be studied by a number of different disciplines, but in this particular course we will use the perspectives offered by political science and international relations theory. The term globalization is said to be slippery, controversial, abstract, and too broad. As government officials, economists, scholars, business leaders, environmentalists, and advocates for indigenous peoples use the term in disparate ways, the concept itself has turned into a symbol. Globalization is a complex phenomenon and its manifestations influence many aspects of domestic and international political, economic, and social life. Can you define globalization and what does it involve? Is globalization new? What drives globalization? Who are the defenders and the critics of globalization? Does globalization make the word more homogeneous? Who are the winners and the losers of globalization? Are nation-states disappearing in favor of global institutions? Is globalization inevitable?
