CHAPTER 1

1. Evaluate this chapter's definition of communication. What are its strengths? What are its weaknesses? If you were asked to improve it in one way, by adding, subtracting, or modifying something, what would you change? Present your answer and explain the reasoning that justifies it in a 100-200 word response. There are many strengths in communication like being able to talk on the phone to friends and family Like anything it does have weaknesses, like if phone lines are down that blocks communication till the problem is solved. If anything needed to be changed I would have to say that there should be a different way to run telephone lines and computer lines. If they were put underground there would not be a problem with our lines of communication being interrupted. Being able to communicate it important especially if you have loved ones in other states and you need to convey important information like the passing of a loved one.

2. Recall an incident in which you or an acquaintance experienced a communication breakdown because of a verbal or non-verbal linguistic barrier. Chronicle this incident in a 100-200 word response. 2) A few years ago I had to train a new sales person on how to perform the job and what needed to be done. The new person had only been in the country for a few months and barely spoke English and I only knew a little Spanish. It made training the woman very hard. I felt really bad and she tried her best to understand what I was saying. I had gone to my managers, but they were no help. So I picked up a program and started learning Spanish so I could communicate better. After a few lessons I started trying my new skill out on the girl and it made her smile. I also had a friend who wrote in Spanish on what she needed to do and I showed her as she read each task. Finally after a few months I was able to speak Spanish and she had been learning English so we overcame the barrier between us.

3. This chapter questions the statement that no people can see the same thing because the statement is self-discrediting. If the statement were true, the person making the statement would have no way of knowing that it is true since, by his or her own admission, he or she could never gain access to what other people see for the purpose of determining this. What do you think? Share your thoughts in a 100-200 word response. Not everyone sees things in the same way. We all have different ways of thinking which makes us unique. If you have two people look at the same object like a cloud, both will say two different things. They would not know what the other was thinking, because of the different trains of thought. You cannot know what another person was thinking otherwise you would be a gifted person. We are taught be open in our thinking and how we perceive things. A painting might be viewed and thought of as a different thing. If everyone shared the same opinions and had the same train of thought the world would be a boring place.

CHAPTER 2

1. Words are powerful communicational tools. Consider the following words of wisdom from James 3: 2-10 (NLT):

"If we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!"

Drawing from your personal experience, write a 100-200 word response in which you describe the power of words to be destructive and to be constructive.

Today bullying is a big issue. The words and actions cause many children to end their own lives. All it takes is hateful words to bring another person down and make them feel unloved and unwanted. The right words can encourage and empower a person to overcome and help other people in need. Just a few words can make or break a person. Words are a powerful tool and must be chosen wisely in each situation. I was bullied for a long time, but with
